Praise for this book

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this book turned out to be a fun and intense read. The idea of ancient Japanese mythology mixing with college life and supernatural threats is really unique. The main character, Llia, goes through a lot and it was easy to root for her. The action scenes were exciting, and I liked the friendship between the roommates too. Some parts reminded me of anime or action games, which made it feel familiar in a good way. It’s definitely got that modern fantasy vibe with emotional moments and cool fight scenes. Worth checking out if you like stories with mythology, found family, and a touch of romance

I was hooked to this book from the first chapter. The mix of Japanese mythology, intense action, and mysterious romance gave me serious Poppy War and V.E. Schwab vibes. Llia is such a badass charecter & watching her grow into her powers was epic. If you love supernatural thrillers, you will love this book.

Fun read! I enjoyed the mix of ancient Japanese myths with a modern city setting (Seattle) as it was really cool and made the story feel fresh and exciting. If you like fast action, mystery, and a little bit of old legend, this book will keep you turning the pages. Check it out if you're looking for a story that pulls you in from start to finish.

Designed by Flaws is one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it. Martell L. Harris writes with raw honesty, sharing real-life struggles and the lessons that come from embracing imperfection. It’s inspiring, relatable, and full of wisdom about growth, self-worth, and purpose. I felt seen in so many of the stories and walked away feeling more empowered to own my journey. Highly recommend for anyone who needs a reminder that our flaws don’t define us—they shape us.

"Designed by Flaws" plunges you into a dark and action-packed urban fantasy world where ancient Japanese evil stirs beneath the surface of Seattle. Llia Ridley's ordinary life is violently upended when she becomes the target of supernatural forces, and the mystery surrounding why she's being hunted is immediately compelling. The author does a great job of creating a sense of unease and danger from the outset, making you feel Llia's disorientation and fear as her world unravels.

The introduction of Reo and TJ, the Yokai Executioners, adds a layer of intriguing mythology and warrior lore. Their backstory, survivors of a devastating conflict, lends them a depth and a sense of burden that makes them more than just typical monster hunters. They carry the weight of the past, making their determination to protect humanity feel genuine. The dynamic between Llia and the Yokai Executioners is a key element, and the question of whether they can truly stop an enemy as old as time creates significant tension. The blend of Japanese mythology with the modern urban setting is well-executed, offering a fresh and exciting take on the supernatural thriller genre. If you enjoy pulse-pounding action, a strong sense of mystery, and a touch of ancient lore, "Designed by Flaws" is a captivating read that will keep you hooked until the very end.

"Designed by Flaws" took me by surprise. What starts as a typical action-fantasy quickly evolves into a deeply emotional story about identity, loss, and resilience. Martell L. Harris masterfully blends Japanese folklore with modern urban life, making it feel authentic and immersive. Reo, the main character, is both a deadly warrior and a deeply human figure, shaped by grief and discipline.

One scene that really stood out was Reo’s confrontation in the bamboo forest when he says, *“Taking her in the first place, Oni, was the path to hell!”* It’s a chilling moment that shows just how clear-cut his moral compass is, even when faced with evil.

Llia, the female lead, brings her own depth to the story. She represents modern strength and cultural duality with authenticity. The shift between perspectives is smooth and keeps the story dynamic.

There are a few moments where the language becomes a bit repetitive or overly dramatic, but overall, it doesn’t take away from the story’s impact.

I’m definitely excited to read the next book in the series!

Designed by Flaws hits different—raw, reflective, and honest without trying too hard. It leans into the mess, the pain, and somehow pulls out strength and purpose. If you’ve been through it and want something real to sit with, this one speaks your language.

This is a unique book.
It is set in Seattle in modern times, but has resonance with ancient Japan.
There’s lots of fighting and battles, but even these have a mystical feel to them.
It’s a bit confusing at the start, but once I caught the vibe of the book, it really drew me in.

I can't put the book down! I was going to read for a few minutes only to realize it's been hours on end. I recommend "Designed by Flaws" to anyone who wants to go on an amazing journey.
